2 days ago in Albuquerque, Jeffrey Zlotnik led meditation for the State of New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department at a Juvenile Detention Facility. A few months ago I was contacted by the Director of Juvenile Justice Services and asked if The Meditation Initiative had ever done any meditation training in New Mexico. Thanks to airfare donated by Mark Simpson and other donors who covered travel expenses, I was able to lead a total of 8 meditation workshops, 3 with adults (administrative staff, guards, medical personnel) and 5 with the kids. In total I led meditation for about 100 people. The experience was amazing and the feedback was excellent. Many of the kids asked if I was coming back and how could they learn to continue meditation on their own. For most of the staff and kids, this was their first exposure to meditation. I am once again convinced I can bring meditation to any state in the country and in any setting. I hope to develop a long-term relationship with the State of New Mexico and collaborate on ways to continue to offer meditation to these young men and women.

The New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department provides an array of prevention, intervention, rehabilitative and after-care services to New Mexico children and their families. Juvenile Justice Services/Facilities (JJS) has adopted the Cambiar New Mexico model which shifts the focus from confinement and punishment to rehabilitation and regionalization. JJS continues to hold young people accountable while providing for their rehabilitation and preparing them for healthy adulthood.
